The following lubricants come in disposable syringes with/without local anaesthetic for instillation into the urethra prior to catheterisation which can help reduce injury to the urothenium and subsequent risk of possible urethral damage.

Lubricants with anaesthetic should be used for both male and female urethral catheterisations. Prior to use any allergies, sensitivities or contra indications must checked with the patient. Lubricant only is required when carrying out supra pubic recatheterisation.

N.B. The first supra pubic recatheterisation carried out in the community must be at least 8 weeks post initial insertion of supra pubic siting carried out in secondary care.
