Dietitians may also request alternative ACBS approved products to be prescribed to meet the needs of individual patients but should give a clear rationale for these requests and consider cost effectiveness (see DM+D for up-to-date prices).

This guidance lists the preferred adult ONS products to be prescribed first line in primary care, and the preferred products that can be prescribed on dietitian/specialist recommendation only.

• This guidance is for people who are drinking ONS (taking orally), not those using ONS through an enteral feeding tube.

• Prescribing should be in line with the recommendations in ONS for adults in primary care guidance.

• Care home residents should rarely need ONS prescribed as they can provide homemade nourishing drinks, or over the counter options such as Complan, to meet the needs of most people.

• Always consider the risk of refeeding syndrome, and any swallowing guidance and allergies or intolerances before prescribing.
