Bariatric surgery: The surgery provider will supply 4 weeks supply of vitamins and minerals post op. Vitamin and mineral supplementation is not offered on the NHS in primary care for bariatric surgery patients. However, B12 injections should be supplied and administered by the GP practice alongside associated blood tests and correction of any deficiencies found subsequently.

For information regarding prescribing in patients who had their procedure at St Richards before 01/10/2017 please contact: sxicb.mot-admin@nhs.net.

Vitamin B compound strong:

PURPLE - for Refeeding syndrome - Use as per 10-day refeeding protocol (see Refeeding syndrome | Items agreed for prescribing to prevent or manage refeeding syndrome)  as per NICE CG32.

Restricted Item (GREEN) For all other indications

Vitamin B compound strong tablets may be prescribed on a short-term basis (10 days) for patients at risk of refeeding syndrome. This also applies to patients who are not harmful or dependent drinkers. In rare cases where there might be a justifiable reason for prescribing vitamin B complex e.g. medically diagnosed deficiency or chronic malabsorption, vitamin B compound strong and not vitamin B compound should be prescribed as it represents better value for money.
