Cyproterone with ethinylestradiol is licensed as a second-line treatment choice for women with severe acne or moderately severe hirsutism
Co-cyprindiol is contraindicated in women with existing or history of VTE, major surgery with prolonged immobilisation, uncontrolled hypertension, migraine, diabetes and in those with a known current venous thrombotic, embolic disorders or any existing predisposition.
It has long been concluded that the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is higher in users of co-cyprindiol (compared with users of low-oestrogen-dose combined oral contraceptives. Prescribers are reminded that:
- co-cyprindiol is not indicated for use solely as an oral contraceptive.
- co-cyprindiol is a treatment for women with severe acne that has not responded to oral antibiotics or for moderately severe hirsutism only.
- co-cyprindiol should be withdrawn 3 to 4 months after the treated condition has sufficiently resolved (i.e. less severe or complete resolution of symptoms).

Isotretinoin is teratogenic and must not be given to women of childbearing potential unless they use effective contraception and then only after detailed assessment and explanation by the physician.
