Topical corticosteroids are applied frequently initially to reduce inflammation following surgical treatment, normally for use under specialist supervision.

Combination products containing a corticosteroid with an anti-infective are sometimes used post surgery to reduce inflammation and prevent infection. Other than this use, they are rarely justified.
