Control of microbial contamination
Preparations for the eye should be sterile when issued; preparations in multiplication containers should be used for no more than:
- 4 weeks after first opening in domiciliary use
- 2 weeks when used on hospital wards - unless infection is present (see bellow),
- 1 week where infection is present (regardless of treatment and indication for prescribing),
- discarded on the day of opening when used in outpatient clinics,
- after single use in surgery, unless otherwise stated.
Separate containers for each eye should be supplied only where there are specific concerns about contamination; fresh supplies should be issued post-operative and at the time of discharge.
