1.11.6 Belts

Belts

• No preferred brand of belt has been identified as the product required is dependent on which pouch is used.
• Belts are used in conjunction with a convexity or 2-piece appliance to increase wear time and pouch security.

Hernia Support Belts

• These items should be recommended by a Stoma Care Nurse after an assessment of need and measured and fitted by a trained fitter (Stoma Care Nurse/Trained fitter).
• Support garments may be used to reduce risk of developing a parastomal hernia and to aid symptom management if a hernia is present.
• Range of belts and girdles (come in various sizes, colour and support levels), shown as below.

Specialist Discretionary Underwear

• THESE ARE NON-FORMULARY. These are not for hernia support. These garments are underwear that may have an internal pocket to aid discretion and give confidence. They are available to be purchased by patients. Underwear includes:
     o Briefs/shorties/boxer shorts/pantie girdles/trunks
     o Pants/vests
     o High waisted or pocketed underwear
     o Ostomy intimacy underwear

• PrescQIPP have produced a bulletin that focuses on ostomy underwear and provides the rationale for ensuring it is only prescribed in specific circumstances, such as parastomal hernia management.
